The UK government updated their travel advise for Ethiopia as of 4 February 22, to include large areas of Amhara regions (North Shoa & Gojam) as green, as well a a large part of Afar region. The inclusion of N.Shoa means that the community trekking in Wof Washa forest will now be in the ‘green zone’. In addition we at Ride the Rift, are staging a charity bike ride on 4-6 March in the Ankober area of North Shoa- now in the Green zone!  Visits to Bahir Dar with the Blue Nile Falls and the monasteries on Lake Tana are now also Green. For now Lalibela and Gondar are in the ‘amber zone’, but we really hope the UK government recognise that they are also safe in the coming weeks. Both Lalibela and Gondar saw a large number of diaspora and other visitors over the January holidays of Gena

Annular Solar eclipse 21 June- be careful

A ‘ring of fire’ – how a solar eclipse looks

This coming Sunday – the 21st June, is the date of solar eclipse across a big swathes of Ethiopia. Across a particular part of Ethiopia it will be an annular solar eclipse. That is to say that the moon will cover more than 98% of the Sun and leave a small rim of light around the edge.

The central line on which the annular eclipse (where it will be longest) will pass cross is the Bahir Dar road just south of Injibara but it crosses the road that goes from Motta to Bahir Dar near a town called Sheba,  comes close Nefas Mewcha in Gayint, then passes Tesfa community trekking guesthouses in North Wollo, passing directly over Lalibela, crosses the main road to Mekele just south of Alamata and heads out into Afar just south of Lake Afdera.

The only point at which it is safe is when the moon has totally covered the sun, at this point is not going to be visible for most people in most places. I have read that the Sun will also damage cameras as it will penetrate writing to them. However it may be that your phone camera can take a few pictures so long as you don’t have it filming the Sun and don’t have it zoomed in. But you must be very careful not to be looking at the Sun while you do this which is difficult.

Tragic crash but a good safety record

Sunday was a very sad day for all those connected with Ethiopia. The tragic crash of ET 302 deeply upset us all. At Tesfa Tours our thoughts and prayers are with the families and friends of those passengers and crew who lost their lives.

We are also saddened by the dispersions on what is Africa’s leading airline (in terms of profit, growth and modernity). Ethiopian Airlines has a very good safety record. It operates a very modern fleet (brand new Boeings and Airbuses – a far more modern fleet than most airlines),

which is backed up by FAA (US Aviation Authority) and EASA (European Aviation Safety Agency) approved maintenance facilities in Addis Ababa (the biggest maintenance facility on the continent). It also has a top notch aviation academy – International Civil Aviation Approved-  with full simulators for all types of aircraft that ET fly. This is an airline with more than 70 years of history, that leads the way in Africa carrying over 10 million passengers a year (2018), on over 100 modern aircraft. I will continue flying on Ethiopian Airlines.
