Trekking with communities in the Wollo highlands near Lalibela or in the sandstone mountains of Tigray
The Tesfa Tours treks take you on walks through the age-old agrarian landscape of the Ethiopian Highlands, following escarpments with birds of prey soaring in the thermals and Gelada baboon scrambling up and down the cliff face you will enter another world. You will cross meadows where local shepherd boys keep an eye on their flocks, while their fathers plough the fields, and their sisters collect water in clay pots. This is a window into the ancient world of the Ethiopian highlands with their churches and their way of life. It will be an experience you will never forget!
Tesfa has developed sites and trekking routes in two distinct areas of Ethiopia where you can stay in local communities. One area is around Lalibela and includes the original sites in Meket Woreda, but now includes Lasta, Gidan and Gubelafta woredas too.
All community tourism sites consist of at least 3 bedrooms, with two beds in each (at least one is a double). There is also a dining tukul, an eco-toilet at all sites, and, at most sites,a simple shower facility.
The walks take you through beautiful and often breathtaking scenery, and are hosted by local communities with income flowing directly to the host communities. Walks between sites take from 4 to 8 hours. Most days (except days in the high afro-alpine mountains) give you a chance to see and interact with the communities. Obviously they also take you thougha range of habitats allowing you the chance to see many birds, other animals and plants that makes up Ethiopia’s unique flora and fauna.
